*  It is also strongly suggested that you purchase a UPS (Universal Power Supply) for your server so that if the power should go out, you would have enough time to shut down the server in an appropriate manner.  We also suggest Dell products because of their reputation and award winning support and service.

Server hard drives can be set up in different fashions.  Here is a description of three common setups:

One Hard Drive:  Practices elect to go with a server with one hard drive.  Usually they will put in a 80GB or higher hard drive with a tape backup.  Running your backups daily is a must for this configuration.  The reason being is that should the computer crash or the hard drive gets corrupted, the only copy of your data you have to restore from is your most recent backup.

Mirrored Hard Drives: Server has two hard drives that are mirrored.  As data is being written to one hard drive, a copy of the data is being stored on the other.  This configuration is optimal when set up in a RAID fashion.  If one hard drive fails, you still have a back up copy and the other hard drive.

Raid 5 Configuration: Server has bins that can hold between 5-7 hard drives depending on the computer.  With this configuration, you have to purchase at least 3 hard drives.  Instead of information being saved to one drive, information is saved across the three drives.

Example: The word Phil – Ph saved on the first drive, I on the second, and L on the third.  Now, should one drive crash, the other two can create the information that was lost - basically, you're still very much in business.

Then you can order a replacement drive and switch it out with no down time. It is optimal when going with this configuration to purchase hot swappable drives. This allows you to switch out hard drives while the server is running.  This setup is more expensive than the rest but is optimal and the most secure.  Also, when your practice grows, you only have to purchase additional drives, not another server.

Routers and Hubs:

You will need an access point that will be attached to the server that allows for wireless communication within your practice.  If you plan on having a high-speed Internet connection at your office (DSL or T1 lines), you will probably need a router.  Some routers include an access point for wireless connections.

Linksys DSL/cable router and wireless access point dual band G, 4 ports

Under this assumption, you will also need a switch (functions as a hub):

2 linksys switches 8 ports each (1 8 port switch will probably be sufficient to start with).
